Flexible Cystoscopy

A cystoscopy is often advised when experiencing any of the following symptoms:

• Chronic pelvic pain
• Blood in the urine
• Difficult/painful urination
• Frequent urinary tract infections

A cystoscopy can also be used to diagnose or treat conditions such as:

• Overactive bladder
• Urinary incontinence
• Interstitial cystitis
• Bladder stones
• Unusual cells found in a urine sample
• A urinary blockage caused by an enlarged prostate gland
• Bladder diseases such as bladder cancer, bladder stones, non-cancerous growths and small tumours

A cystoscopy is generally performed under local anaesthetic or sedation. With local anaesthetic a numbing gel will be applied to the urethra and in the case of sedation, an injection will be used. Whilst lying on your back, the consultant will insert a narrow, flexible, telescopic camera (cystoscope) up through the urethra and into the bladder. A sterile solution will then be slowly pumped into the bladder to provide greater visibility of the bladder lining.

Images from the cystoscope are relayed onto a screen, enabling the consultant to guide the camera, make assessments and identify any potential abnormalities. Additional procedures can be carried out at the same time, including the removal of bladder stones, ureteric stents or a tissue biopsy.

The procedure usually takes about 10 to 20 minutes
