Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition caused by compression of the median nerve in the wrist as a result of swelling or inflammation of the surrounding tendons. Carpal tunnel release surgery is a procedure aimed at relieving the pressure on the nerve and thus the associated symptoms.
Following consultant assessment and advice, carpal tunnel release surgery is often advised when experiencing any of the following symptoms:
Carpal tunnel release surgery is a minimally invasive surgery carried out as a minor op procedure, under local anaesthetic, in our outpatient department.
The procedure involves making a very small incision in the wrist, followed by a small cut to the ligament at the top of the carpal tunnel. This releases the pressure being placed on the median nerve. The consultant will then stitch up the cut in your wrist and a light dressing applied, followed by a pressure bandage. The scar may remain sensitive for 3 weeks.
The procedure will take approximately 25-40 minutes.
