A hernia occurs when an internal organ or fatty tissue pushes through a weakness in the surrounding tissue wall, causing a lump. There are many types of hernias, but they are most commonly found in the abdomen and groin areas. Hernia repair is a very common surgical procedure and involves moving the protruding tissue back into place and repairing the weakness in the abdominal wall muscles.
A hernia repair is often advised when experiencing pain, swelling and discomfort at the site of the hernia.
There are two types of surgery for hernia repair:
Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery
The surgeon makes multiple incisions around the site of the hernia. A thin, lighted scope, called a laparoscope, is then inserted into one of the incisions, with tools used to repair the hernia being inserted in the remaining holes.
Open surgery
The surgeon pushes the hernia back into position through an incision made close to the site of the hernia. The weakened area is then repaired using stitches or a piece of reinforcing synthetic mesh.
